Accessible to All

A student feels a dinosaur model. We want everyone who visits the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired (NCECBVI) website to feel welcome and find the experience rewarding.

What are we doing?

To help us make the NCECBVI website a positive place for everyone, we opted to follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 as specified by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and user friendly for everyone.

The guidelines have three levels of accessibility (A, AA and AAA). We’ve chosen Level AA as the target for our website.

Website Navigation

Most of our visitors will be able to navigate through our website by using a mouse to click on links. For our visitors who use assistive devices, we added some features to help with navigation:

  • Tab Indexing – Every link in our website has been assigned a tab index number allowing visitors with motor coordination disabilities to easily navigate through the website simply by pressing the TAB key on their keyboard. Numbering is assigned in a logical order beginning with the website's main navigation links and ending with the footer links.
  • Access Keys – Access keys have been assigned to the main site navigation links and the Quick Links to make it quicker and easier to navigate through our website. Each link's access key is identified by the underlined letter that appears in the link (Home). Please see the Access Keys Table below for specific information about using access keys for navigation.
  • Site Map – Visitors can quickly and easily find content on our website by visiting the Site Map page. This page acts as a table of contents for the website.
  • Redundant Links – Access to secondary pages is available through the main website navigation and through links directly on each section's pages.
